Newer Mountain Bike Gear Skipping and/or not catching
#1
I just bought a Mountain Bike that I suppose you would classify as a beginner one (Giant Revel 2) and it has been a great experience getting back into riding. Not too long ago I sort of crashed, what I mean by that is I hit the side of an object and ever since that point my front shifting is seeming to suffer. First problem was that shifting from 1st gear to 2nd gear would not always work, it just wouldn't catch and would make a clicking noise as expected. Also shifting into third would do the same. I tried adjusting the shifting knob (the one by the actual gear change on the handlebar) and now if I am in 3rd gear it will skip 2nd gear completely and go to 1st gear.

I think I know why it happened. When I hit the left side of the bike in my accident I braced myself and in my brace of impact I adjusted both front and rear gears.

Nothing seems damaged or broken. Just a lot of scratches from "excessive riding" Smile

Likely the front derailleur was knocked out of alignment or bent, rather than that you "adjusted both ...gears." The front derailleur must be at the proper rotation and alignment to work properly. If not it cannot be adjusted. I would suggest that even though you had an accident you take it back to the shop where you bought it, especially as there may be more items that need attention. It's likely you will find that they will charge you little or nothing to go over it.
