Strange Play in Rear Hub
#1
Hi,
I am getting very strange play in my rear hub. It does not feel like the typical wobbly type of play and it is still there even after over tightening the cones.
It happens only if i put pressure on the axle on the non drive side. It feels as if the cone is "snapping" into place and as it does this it makes a loud metallic clang sound.
I opened up the hub to see if anything looked worn (things look okay in there), and I cleaned the bearings, cones and cup and repacked it. But the "play" is still there...

Any ideas?

Buddy... You may have one of cone slipping over the axle threads. This might screw up all your rear wheel set up. I would suggest you to change the axle & cones ASAP. Other chance is a cracked cup.

Can you show us a picture of your wheel? Also check the rims and spokes.
Good maintenance to your Bike, can make it like the wheels are, true and smooth!

Thanks for everybody's suggestions! I found out what was wrong. It was the cup inside the hub that was loose, it would spin independently of the hub and had a bit of play. It is a cheap wheel which might explain why that happened. I don't think there is much I can do about it.

If I understand you correctly the cup spun. That's unusual. Ye we do not know what bike or where you are but you can get rear wheel and replace it. Thats best. You can try as a hail Mary pass, clean the hub well and the cup preferably with acetone than use red loctite and press it tightly in place keep pressure on ( reassemble without grease) and let dry overnight. The red loctite is used as stud and bearing mount and available in small tubes in automotive stores.
