Friction Shifter
#1
I have a 9 speed Shimano 105 rear derailleur. Will "8 speed" Shimano 600 friction shifter levers be compatible with this derailleur? I have heard the "8 speed" when using them as friction levers does not matter. Is this true?

You can pretty much use friction shifters with any derailleur and any number of speeds/sprockets.

yes and yes

the challenge is the finer adjustment required for 9 speed vs 8 speed; the total cable travel is the same for both.
