Crank skip

if i'm cruising on my schwinn tiger and go to pedal, my crank skips a revolution before it engages and i'm able to pedal normally. whats wrong?

Does the chain skip on the front, or does the chain skip on the rear, or does the freewheel rotate without driving the rear wheel?

The answer depends on where the skipping is occurring.

Clutches within the free wheel may be jammed or broken...

Overhauling a freewheel is a hassle. Freewheels are sub-20-USD, I would just replace it...
