Alternative to a Shimano Alivio M410 7-8 Speed rear derailleur?
#1
I need to replace a worn original Shimano M410, 7-8 speed rear derailleur for a city commuter bike (has done about 10-8,000klms). Does anyone know of an alternative or is it best to stick with it? I noted mixed comments on Chain Reaction Cycles.

Thank you

I would hazard a guess that most derailers would work. The newer 10 speed models may be over the top. Things to look for are chain ring compatability, some derail trolley wheels would be too close to the largest chain wheel. Any one else add to this reply?

The 10 speed RDs don't work, they pull a different amount of cable, if I followed the discussions. There are ways to convert them by mounting the cable differently. Up to 9 speed there's no problem. Get last-or-earlier-year's LX or DX (max. 9 speed!). Take a look at the specs regarding the max. sprocket size they can accommodate.

I have M410 on one of my commuters, works well. It seems to have worked well for you, and they are very inexpensive now; so why change?

Hi friends,
Me too, I need to replace the Shimano Alivio M410 8-speed.
I would like to ask if the Alivio M430 9-speed would still be compatible though the rear cassette is 8-speed.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers.

The M430 (and many many others) will work fine.

I would replace the cassette or freewheel and the chain at the same time.

Hi Nigel,

Thanks for the reply.
Well my bike is almost new (3 months old). I'm having to change the derailleurs because some kids played with gear shifter. And when I rode the bike, the chain got stuck and forced the rear derailleur.

I believe that the cassette and the chain are still in good state.

So do you believe that I can replace my M410 with a M430 directly, leaving the rest of the equipments as they are?

Once again thanks for the reply.

Regards,
Jhummun.

Yes.

You will have to either break the chain, or take the derailleurs apart to remove the old one and attach the new one.

The shift cable may also need to be replaced; depending how good the end is.
