World Tourist gear cable guide.

A couple of months ago i acquired this 1980 Schwinn World tourist

As you can see, it was a total mess!

thanks to some extensive help from Nigel (thanks dude) I have been trying to bring it back to life.

I changed it from a Schwinn FFS system to the traditional system and went for a new BB along with a 3 chain ring crank

in the back I have a 7 gear cassette and am waiting for the shimano tx-35 rear derailleur.

I also changed the handle bars and added cross brake levers in addition to the drop bar brake levers and also some sun race shift levers to be installed on the stem.

I will stop here to ask a question... Grease? is it necessary to grease or lube the brake and/or shifter cables?

because this bike was only a 5 gear there is no place for the FD cable to go. I noticed that my MTB had a plastic piece under the BB where both FD and RD cables ride on . it is held in place by a small screw.

this is my last challenge.. how can get the FD to work.
I would like to have that same plastic piece but I also don't want to damage the BB that I installed. what other alternate installation methods are there for a FD cable. please help !! my cable stops arrive next week and so does my RD. I really hope to get this bike on the road by the end of the month..

I Think ill go with the Tape ill see how it goes,, I just don't want to take everything apart again lol worked a lot on it and its almost there. thanks man I appreciate your help!!!

Some of these may have the FD cabling termination backwards, as in those days it was common for there to be a housing between the stop and the FD.

Personally; I'd go with the tape, as the BB is already installed. If it wasn't installed, I would drill and tap.

Beautiful job on the Schwinn. That bike never had it so good. Local hardware (old school) stores will often have smaller chunks of tape. Car stereo stores will often have the black 3m stuff on rolls.
I think the metal tube clamp on guides would look best.

Yea i like the clam but and ive seem them before but i dont know where it would go.. seems eaier to tape it up .. how about the othe question i have.. should i put lube in the gear and brake cables?

Yes; a few drops of Tri Flow in the housing, then push the cable through the housing.

I got this because the cable STOPS on my bike said 11/8.. but when they arrived i saw they were too nig but i tested and the shim u gabe me worked perfectly .

The one I sent to you is 28.6mm inner diameter (to match the seat tube on the WT) and 34.9mm outer diameter to match the M413. I bought this:

in random length, cut off a short piece in a chop saw with a fine tooth metal cutting blade (do NOT use a blade intended for wood - it will break something - trust me on this, use a hack saw if you do not have the correct blade), then with a hack saw, sliced in two, clean up with file and sanding block.

Wow, Nigel the master of parts.

You can tape the guide under the BB, lots of double adhesive stuff at Radio Shack. You can also use (prefered) 30 minute or two hour epoxy it for stronger bond, let it harden a bit so it does not run and apply. As per screw the screw with the Shimano guide was a sheet metal screw which just requires a pilot hole. Although if you do not need to drill don't.

Who are you building the bike for Jimbo?

Re- 3M VHB tape - it is stronger than the epoxies most people can/will buy. 3M VHB is not as strong as 3M DP420 or DP460 epoxy - but the average consumer doesn't want to pay nearly $100- for one dual pack. RS double sticky and similar is less than ¼ as strong. I have to know adhesives as part of my day job. Smile

Jim is building it for his wife. I traded a FD and shim for the FFS parts off the frame with him.

Hey guys! Yea its for my wife she loved the bike so i told her i would make it new again. Also this way i can be assure that i wont sit in the garage.. u know since i personally worked on the bike. Its not a cookie cutter walmart bike . Its custom . Yea nigel is the man !

Interesting 3m vhb must be strong stuff. Too bad its not available in small rolls. I used the 3M white spongy double stick tape when we were doing a movie and needed to put signs over existing railroad station signs and the train. Held up so good it was a PITA to get them off.:-)
The wise guy designer got magnetic vinyl but when the train came in it was non magnetic stainless steel. DUH.......I let him sweat for a while and than pulled out the tape. :-)
AS per epoxy I have used JB Weld as filler and epoxy, among others, About as good as I need.

Hey guys i come to you for more advice. I recieved my rd tx35 and it has the hook , with the screw and the half moon shaped nut on the mounting area.... Does any one know of a tutorial with pictures. I tried lookimg on youtub but i only see the nes that are screwd on.of if some 1 could guide me id really appriciate it ..

Hi Jim;

Most easily installed with the frame upside down. The wide flat side of the nut is on the inside, with the open end of the half moon pointing forwards (the axle nestles into the open end), the screw goes through the hanger on the outside and into the half moon nut to clamp the RD in place. The assembly needs to go as far back in the drop as possible.
