Replacing gear cable

My sons Giant orc2 gear cable needs replacing but we haven't been able to find any instructions on google of how to do it!

Also do you need specific cable for specific gearing eg tiagra shimano?

I also found that any cable for gearing systems will work, but to be sure could you post a couple of photos so we can help ya out ?
