Bike Recommendations For Back-Roads
#1
My Census Bureau job periodically has me doing field work in areas with logging trails and poorly maintained back-roads. I was tumbling around the idea of bringing an electric bike along so I could leave my car at the main road when I have such work.

As it would be transported by car, it would need to be folding. Price is somewhat of a consideration. ... Range. top speed and charging speed are *not* important - it would only be used a few miles at a time, and my job requires I pay attention to my surroundings.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Folding electric bikes are going to be out of the question.

They are only for urban, and will not be able to tread those types of conditions really.

You'll need one with balloon tires—like 2.0 ~ 2.3. And then you'll have to get a bike rack for the rest. SeaSucker makes a really popular one. Dual suspension would probably be a bonus here for the type of conditions you're saying.

I do not know specific brands, but there are many folders designed to be used off-road. Your weight, and what you need to carry with you for your job will be things that you need to take into consideration. Probably looking at spending $800-$1200 for something of decent quality. Maybe try to find something used if the price is too high, but then you run into the problem of how much life the battery it has left on it and the cost to replace it, as well as the other general concerns when buying something used.
Take care,
Jesper
