Insanity. Let's put low income cyclists without other means of transportation out of work. I wonder what the fine is for jaywalking; do they cut off your feet?!
I can easily understand the safety aspect behind it, but that's it.
I seem to remember Virginia having a bicycle registration fee when I lived there in the 80s. It was only to fatten the government coffers since it did nothing to help you get your (my) stolen bike returned.

That bill was killed about 4 days after I made my comment in 2022.
So there is no law that imposes those penalties on cyclists.
Actually, Virginia law states (or did?) that a cyclist, motorcycle , scooter can run a red light; but conditions still apply (come to a full stop first , wait 2 cycles of the light or 2 minutes which ever is shorter).

The nit wit that came up with that law should be thrown out of office.

It is not a law. It was a pending bill that was not passed into law. The nit wit was an elected official so those that voted the individual into office are the nit wits since folks often vote merely on party lines and not for the best candidate. Our recent past presidential elections are enough to prove that point and it is happening again as usual.

I was trying to point out that anyone that would come up with an insane law like that, would probably come up with others, on other subjects, and should be thrown out of office. We are far more than over regulated.

This might be extreme, but I’m okay with it if the same fine is applied to other motorists on the road.

As a lifelong hardcore cyclist, I believe that some laws or bills should be applicable to us cyclists. While cycling in the Boston area, I saw so many of my fellow riders jump red lights, sometimes hit other cyclists or pedestrians, and ride on sidewalks without any concern for people walking or using wheelchairs.

Only when we are held accountable with some responsibility, or fear of a fine, will we learn to use our 'power' more responsibly.

Maybe we cyclists should be required to carry some form of insurance or a basic identification card.

I’m someone who would wait at a red light all alone, hoping for it to turn green, without realizing my bike won’t trigger the light to change. But I think some of these measures would be beneficial for us cyclists, as we are the least protected and most exposed commuters on the road.

It's not that bureaucrats hate cyclists -- the truth is that everyone hates cyclists because some cyclists make a special effort to be hated.

No one notices the few cyclists who behave properly in traffic, but they do notice the majority who feel completely exempt from all traffic regulations.

Yeah, I hate the use of the term "cyclists" as if everyone's the same. I go out of my way to surprise drivers with my thoughtfulness and politeness, but there's always that one car that hates all "cyclists".

When I cycle in London (England), I'm amazed at how few people on bikes pay any heed whatsoever to even basic consideration for other road (and sidewalk) users, let alone the law. I'm always that one weirdo that actually stops for red lights, LOL.

Ditto, @enkei. I'm also one of those cyclists who stops at red lights, avoids riding on sidewalks, and has received both kudos for obeying the rules and criticism simply for being on the road on a bicycle.

I used to commute from a suburb of Boston into the city and truly understand why some motorists get frustrated with cyclists. Many cyclists weave through traffic, squeeze into tight spaces, or even use the opposite lane to get ahead, leaving drivers stuck in traffic. Riding in Boston traffic isn’t for everyone, and it’s best avoided by anyone pressed for time. Unfortunately, Boston sees several cyclist fatalities each year, so I always made my best effort to avoid becoming part of that statistic.

While some motorists acknowledge my courtesy when I stop at lights, others have reacted aggressively just because I’m on a bicycle on the road.

I think, and agree with, the fines should be the same and enforced; $500.00 AND confiscation are a bit too much. Bike riders must obey the laws even though we take up less space. I realize auto and golf cart drivers usually don't give bikes the room they deserve but........ let's set an example. Maybe because of 20 years Army, I obey orders/laws.
