700c Road Wheel Help!!

Hello,

I bought a used bike (mid 80s peugeot ventoux) in an attempt to save money because I did not need anything fancy, just something to enjoy and get me from A-B.

Anyway, I hit a pothole on my last ride and bent the crap out of my rear wheel. When I took my bike to the local bike shop, they did not have any wheels in my price range and so I started looking on the internet.. The bike shop said I have 700c road wheels.

I found a 700c road wheel at a reasonable price but I was not sure if my tired would fit, so I emailed the company and asked. I gave them the tire size, 700x23c, and specifically asked if the wheel I wanted to buy would work PROPERLY. They said yes....
Long story short, the new wheels are too wide for my tires. So I need help looking for the correct wheel width. As I mentioned, I need a 700c road wheel that has the correct width to fit a 700x23c tire properly.

What metric should I be looking for when looking at wheels? Do you recommend any websites? Know of any second hand websites? The bike shop also said i have a threaded hub, which i guess are uncommon these days. I don't mind replacing he cassette though. Anything else I need to consider?

Look for a 622-13 or 622-15 wheel with a freehub, not a cassette...

Also measure the over locknut distance of the old wheel. If it is less than 130mm you will have a hard time mounting the wheel as you frame is too narrow...
What exactly do you mean with "too wide"? Is the rim diameter slightly too large to get the tyre on without resorting to force or is the rim width too wide so that the tyre cannot be seated correctly?

It would be cheaper to get 25mm tires than a new wheelset

If it's just A-B and he broke a rear wheel then maybe 28mm or 32mm tire on the rear if it will make it through the brake opening.
