Tried my hand at making salve from all that bud I recently grew in my yard, lol. I'm not into Big Pharma poison, and the salve works wonders on aching joints! The web recipe I used called for 7 grams of chopped bud---I used at least an ounce, after shipping the rest to friends, lol. Felt like I was back in high school chemistry class! Key factor is the regulation and maintenance of temperature during each step of the process! I used the "double boiler" method, with one pan inside another... that way I could more carefully monitor the temperature of the infused oil in the inner pan. Here we go with pics, first step is the decarboxylation---yes, that's an actual word---of chopped bud in order to free the cannabinoids and THC for infusion! Decarboxylation just means roasting the chopped bud at lower temps (180* to 240*, I kept the oven at 200* for this step).
Here's my jury-rigged "double boiler"---a small saucepan inside a fairly-deep skillet. Water in the outer pan, oil in the inner pan! Two crossed butter knives under the inner pan to keep it off the heat source!
Once the food-grade coconut oil melts clear, we add the decarboxylated bud to the oil so infusion can begin! Temp range must be 180* to 240* for this step, I went with 220* to bring the water to a simmering boil, but I carefully monitored the oil temp... boiling oil is verboten!
That lid came in handy for regulating the temp, as needed...
After 2-3 hours of slow oil infusion, the saucepan contents are strained to remove the chopped bits of bud... I saved the oil-saturated buds to dump into pot brownie mix, more on that in a moment, lol.
See the "brick" of beeswax atop the box of brownie mix? That went into the strained oil after I dumped the oil back into the saucepan... I should've only used half the brick of wax, as the finished salve is a bit hard, in terms of consistency. However, I can thaw the jar of salve by removing it from the fridge (where experts say to store it), and I can also warm the jar in a bowl of hot water until the salve is easy to apply.
The jar of salve, you can see how the salve is harder than it needs to be. Meh, it's easy enough to thaw the salve, so no worries. I'm happy with the end result, and the salve is totally making my injured knee feel 100% better! No Big Pharma poison either, lol. A plastic tub of salve sold at the dispensary costs $50, and the tub is the size of a hockey puck. I made three times as much salve, and an equal measure of my homemade salve only cost $10 to make, instead of $50, which works for me. Did I ever tell y'all that I'm a CHEAP B@STARD? Lol.
It's comforting to know that---since we're making ballistic pot brownies for pain relief---there are NO artificial dyes in the mix, lol.
There's the bowl of oil-saturated bud from the salve-making operation, we're adding that to the brownie mix, in addition to the leftover leaf material saved from the harvest.
Mixing everything together...
Once the mix goes into a ceramic baking dish, it resembles a cow pie, lol...
Ditto after baking...
But the brownie is mighty tasty, with the weed masked by the strong chocolate flavor! WTF, I can always reheat each brownie and choke it down with milk or ice cream, lol.
P.S. I ate a "pie slice" of this brownie yesterday after two applications of salve on my knee, and I was feeling no pain, lol... after a week of severe pain associated with the recent injury, it was nice to chillax and let the knee heal. Good way to save money too, making CBD/THC salve instead of paying the ridiculous whorehouse price down at the dispensary. Cheers!
