Assembling custom 8 speed cassette

Anyone know.. if Sunrace 8 speed cassette cogs are interchangeable with Shimano hyperdrive cogs? IE: could they be used in the 'stack'.. so to speak? I'm aware of rear derailleur specs etc.. possible shifting indexing issues. Or the reverse... Shimano into a Sunrace unit... ?

You will have to get out your calipers and measure. Sunrace, SRAM, and most others except Campy work well with Shimano indexing, sometimes better than Shimano cassettes.

I picked up a new 12-30 Sunrace cassette yesterday at the SF Bike Expo for $10-, it is already installed on my GT, and is smoother than the old 11-30 Shimano ever was.

I guess.. I was looking for empirical KNOW-ledge.

The Sheldon Brown appears to assume they interchange. Yet... he's known to be wrong.. time to time.

Quoting Brown: "For example, if you want a 13-34 8-speed, you can start with an 11-28 -- but to use a larger chainwheel or get a lower bottom gear, you might make this modification:

Replace the 11 and 13 with a top-position 13.
Add a spacer and a 34 after the 28. (You don't need to buy the spacer, because you can use the spacer that came between the original flat 13 and the 15.)"

This tells me the dude hasn't actually done this.. only on the keyboard. Tell me why fellow 'wrenchers'... what is wrong with that routine?

Sheldon was only talking about mixing cogs within one brand and type, not across different manufacturers.

In one posting.. yes. But the implication otherwise is they'll mix.

His end cog assumption... in combination with various other 'keyboard ideas'... means now I don't bother reviewing his data on searches.

Well, given that Sheldon has been dead a good number of years and the bike industry continues to make changes to their designs, it doesn't seem odd that you're going to come across statements that may have been true at the time but don't apply to all applications, everywhere, for all time.

The answer to your original question seems to be...no one here is sure. Why don't you figure it out and tell us your know-ledge.
